Madeline’s Branding Shoot

artist branding image features a young woman with dark hair, in a burgandy dress sat on a pink fluffy sofa with her hand under her chin. She is in a photo studio. There is brightly coloured pop artwork either side of her.

Welcome to the world of Madeline Atropa, a talented multimedia artist I had the pleasure of working with recently. Madeline’s work takes inspiration from Japanese art and folklore to create evocative pieces. The piece pictured above in two halves titled “The Happiest Girl in the World”, is a take on modern pop art with a dark twist. I wanted to set up the lighting and staging to reflect the vibrant use of colour in the piecem as well as landing the shadows on the darker side to further the contrast between the two halves of the piece. Getting to delve into an artists work like this makes me feel like I’m bringing the piece to life and placing the artist within it. I draw a huge amount of inspiration from other artists of all mediums, so being trusted with their branding is alwasys a huge honour.

Another inspiration we drew on was the late Alexander McQueen, a true visionary lost far too soon. We wanted to pay homage to the famous portrait of him pictured with a skull, a motif that featured heavily in his work. Madeline has created her own skulls that are strikingly colourful!

A young dark haired woman sits with her art on her lap, it's neutral, abstract, and painted on canvas. She's wearing a black dress and sitting in a photo studio against a neutral background with pampas grass on the right.

Not all of Madeline’s work is bright and colourful, to accent the different themes throughout her portfolio, we actually created three sets in the studio! This one we kept simple, but I wanted to reflect the neutrality and warmth in this piece. Sometimes all you need is a brush of pampas grass to elevate a simple studio portrait!

A studio artist portrait against a grey and red backdrop. An artist sits on a brown stool, she's wearing a red top and a black skirt. The table next to her features masks, a handmade skull, a candle, and pomegranates, and cherry blossoms in front.

The last set was a bit darker to accompany Madeline’s fox inspired mask collection, Haus of Vulpes. Bringing another touch of Alexander McQueen into the shoot, one of his iconic scarves was used to drape the table. We had lots of fun putting these concepts together and plenty of fun on the shoot day!
